Freedom and Agency: Two Critiques to Hard Determinism
نویسندگان
چکیده
Moral responsibility is the very foundation of all moral actions and social practices. Hard determinism, however, becomes a serious threat to morality by raising impossibility responsibility. This paper evaluates two criteria under which can be justified, reconstructs Strawson's basic argument hard provides solutions (one libertarian, one soft deterministic) challenge raised determinism. Finally, this points out that does not necessarily require freewill as its precondition.

Determinism Should Ensure Deadlock-Freedom
This program creates two tasks, f and g, and runs them in parallel. The par statement blocks until both f and g terminate. c is a channel and both a and b are incarnations of c. g takes c by out (reference); any modification of b is therefore reflected in main’s c. f takes c by in (value), and hence f maintains a local copy of c. Suppose f wants to receive the updated value, then it explicitly ...
متن کاملFreedom, Weakness, and Determinism: From Linear-Time to Branching-Time
Model checking is a method for the veri cation of systems with respect to their speci cations. Symbolic model-checking, which enables the veri cation of large systems, proceeds by calculating xed-point expressions over the system's set of states. The -calculus is a branching-time temporal logic with xed-point operators. As such, it is a convenient logic for symbolic modelchecking tools. In part...
متن کاملGod, Freedom, and Human Agency
I argue that, contrary to the opinion of Wes Morriston, William Rowe, and others, a supremely perfect God, if one should exist, would be the freest of all beings and would represent the clearest example of what it means to act freely. I suggest further that, if we regard human freedom as a reflection of God’s ideal freedom, we can avoid some of the pitfalls in both the standard libertarian and ...
متن کاملFreedom, Resistance, Agency
The aim of this article is to show (1) that freedom and agency are among Nietzsche’s central concerns, (2) that his much-discussed interest in power in fact originates in a first-person account of freedom, and (3) that this novel understanding of the phenomenon of freedom informs his ‘theory’ of agency. I will argue that while Nietzsche questions the weight philosophers have given to the first-...
متن کاملFrom Determinism to Non-determinism in Recognizable Two-Dimensional Languages
Tiling systems that recognize two-dimensional languages are intrinsically non-deterministic models. We introduce the notion of deterministic tiling system that generalizes deterministic automata for strings. The corresponding family of languages matches all the requirements of a robust deterministic class. Furthermore we show that, differently from the one-dimensional case, there exist many cla...
